Hey you! Yeah you! You wanna be a Heavy Gunner but don’t know where to start? Here we go! Solo is preceded by a 🙍‍♂️ and group build will be 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦. The first rule to always remember by the great Bearded one (Know as Medic1556) is this : Kill everything, loot everything, scrap everything, repeat. Everything you come about, loot it, and scrap what’s not useful. It’ll pay off on the long run.

And if it’s getting dark, hold TAB to light up your pip-boy. But watch out, light can easily ruin your stealth. And press “Q” to use VATS. As a melee build, it is normally useless, but if there’s an enemy nearby sneaking around, it can make your job at finding it quite easier. 😉

Levels 1 to 5, the basics

Welcome to Vault 76! Follow the quests and feel free to explore this place. You’ll reach level 2 when you go outside the vault, so CONGRATULATIONS! Open your pip-boy menu by pressing TAB and press “T” to chose your first perk point and card!

🙍‍♂️ Chose STRENGTH, then press “C” and “Z” to change the Perk Card sub-category until you find Action Boy/Girl, which is an Agility Card.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Chose STRENGTH, then press “C” and “Z” to change the Perk Card sub-category until you find Inspirational, which is a Charisma Card.

You’ll receive a machete from Lacey outside the vault. This machete will be your bread an butter until level 5. Equip it by pressing TAB and opening the Item tab, then in the Weapons sub-tab. Get some time to familiarize yourself with your pip-boy menu. You can (And should) press ESCAPE to view the map and the game’s menu. Follow the little yellow square for the main quest. You can attack by pressing the LEFT mouse button and block by using the RIGHT mouse button. You’ll encounter some Liberator if you follow the road to the Wayward, it’s good practice for combat. And don’t forget to loot them with “E”! You can Sneak by pressing CTRL. You will also pass by a farmland with a lot of Scorched (Intelligent ghouls), if you think you’re ready for this challenge, go nuts and wack away. They’ll drop some firearms that you can use, but bullets at this level is a pain in the butt, hence the use of melee until higher levels. If you explore a bit, you might also find a logmill with Ticks and an isolated cabin with Settlers attacked by ghouls. If you pass by a fallen tree, you can get some wood by pressing E while aiming at it. Wood is used for many things, and it’s always good to have some on hands.

Once at the Wayward, there will be an event inside. Do what seems good to you, then talk with everybody inside. Don’t worry about the weirdo upstairs, he’ll be useful way later in game. Duchess and Mort should have everything you need to know. Go back outside, and follow the quests at the top-right of your screen. And that’s it! Follow the objectives until you reach level 5. Place your CAMP near the Wayward (You can craft CAMP items by holding “V”), place Crane treasure hunting Inc. sign down, a WEAPONS WORKBENCH and a Stashbox (You can store items in it, usually for Junk), craft a piece of armor and a weapon at the nearby Overseer Camp, listen to the holotape in your Pip-Boy menu, and head for Flatwoods by following the roads.

You’ll encounter some baddies on the way, but once you reach Green County Lounge on the way, grab everything you can. In the Gym, you’ll probably find a Boxing Glove on a shelf. If not, quit the server and come back on another one until you find one. This glove will replace your machete at level 5, but you might want to repair it at a nearby Weapons Workbench. Continue to Flatwoods and follow the quests there. (Don’t worry about Hunter for Hire for now). It will teach you how to make food and water and your first step to become a Responder!

Once that’s done, go North to the Radio Station for Hunter for Hire. In the Terminal, press “R” to load the right Holotape in, then go back to your camp by fast traveling there via the Escape map.

🙍‍♂️ At level 3, chose Agility and take once again Action Boy (Fusing them together).
At level 4, take Charisma and chose Lone Wanderer. You’ll also get a bunch of random cards from a pack.
Finally at level 5, chose Strength and Iron Fist. Equip that Boxing Glove!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 At level 3, chose Charisma and take once again Inspirational (Fusing them together).
At level 4, same thing, Charisma and Inspirational. You’ll also get a bunch of random cards from a pack.
Finally at level 5, chose Strength and Iron Fist. Equip that Boxing Glove!

At level 5, you can deactivate PVP via the Escape menu. Press “Z” while on the map, go to Settings, Game and make Pacifist Mode ON. This will allow you to blindly attack monster without the fear of accidently attacking a player and getting recked by them.

People will start popping up at your camp. Talk to them until you get the info you need, and go back to Duchess. She and Mort will ask you to investigate the WV Lumber Co., which is far north. Go back to the vault entrance and follow the quest markers, one by one. They’ll introduce you to the Settlers, then to the Raiders. These are the two new factions, but don’t worry about them for now. Watch out though, if you’re going to Tyler County Park to meet the lone Raider which will give you a very special side-quest, (And find Jangles (A space monkey plush) as a mini quest in the park itself), there’s a lot of Schorched there and you might wanna farm near Flatwoods and make some better armor and healing salves.

At this point, you might want to link Healing Salves and Stimpaks to Hotkeys. Scroll your mouse wheel to open that specific menu!

Near the Park, there’s a Workshop called Tyler County Dirt Track. Those are littered everywhere in West Virginia and are an easy way to get resources by claiming them. However, you’ll need to defend them from waves of monsters, and other players can try to steal it from you too, even if you’re pacifist. You can defend your Workshop from players by turning your pacifist mode off and getting in a good old PvP fight. It is also a great way to get XP.

Anyway, go to the Lumber Co when you’re ready.

At level 7, Strength and Iron Fist again.
At level 8, Charisma and Lone Wanderer
At level 9, Charisma and Lone Wanderer
Finally at level 10, Agility and Action Boy

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 At level 6, take another point in Strength and Iron Fist.
At level 7, Strength and Iron Fist again.
At level 8, Strength and Action Boy
